Maxim Timofeev is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker, and musician based in the UAE. His practice is centered on investigating the structures of perception, liminal states of consciousness, and the mechanisms of internal transformation, alongside the deconstruction of the ego– transcending its boundaries to actualize the authentic self.
He holds a Master’s degree in the Psychology of Creativity.
For Maxim Timofeev, working on large-scale, long-term projects evokes the deepest emotions and encompasses scientific research. It is precisely the passion for creating his own worlds and immersing the viewer within them, combined with a childlike curiosity to comprehend the dense and subtle worlds, that drives Maxim Timofeev’s artistic practice toward expression through various media.
His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across nine global capitals, with his international travels closely tied to competitive accolades and film festival awards. He serves as a Consul for the international organization Art of Health, and his artworks are held in institutional collections, including Hudson Valley MOCA New York.
Following an extended hiatus after completing his formal arts education, Timofeev’s return to active practice occurred in 2019 through street photography in India, where he documented the ritual night of Mahashivaratri. Upon his return, he developed a digital graphics series that was subsequently showcased in major national-level museum exhibitions. During his formative artist residencies, installation art became his next medium, enabling him to manifest the subjects of his digital works into physical space.
His approach to artistic practice is revealed through interaction with materials like steel shot, chemical reagents, shattered glass, altar dust, blood, and everything organically tied to the creation of the work. During the creative act, a dialogue takes place– through dance and throat singing, strikes and silence, love and detachment.
Among his seminal projects is Your Dreams (?). Initiated at a regional museum with spatial and audio installations, the success of its debut iteration inspired a collaborative experiment with clinical psychologists and psychiatrists, culminating in his first film. The research phase for the subsequent stage spanned several years, while his inquiry into the psychological mechanisms underlying the audio-installation component evolved into a doctoral thesis. His investigation into sonic environments expanded through binaural field recordings across 14 countries, ultimately transitioning into musical expression via analog synthesis. Finding commercially available hardware inadequate for executing his conceptual intents, the artist was driven to engineer custom
instruments under his own proprietary brand.
Regardless of the medium chosen, Timofeev’s artistic statements are invariably filtered through lived experiences that plunge the viewer into the existential depths of perception. It is from this space that insights and inquiries emerge, triggering a shift in the spectator’s assemblage point and instigating profound transformational processes.
